                              stephanie

Stephanie Rubin is the founder of Sustainable Pet Design. She is a LEED accredited Green Associate and holds a Master's Degree from the Conway School of Landscape Design and a bachelor's degree in literature from UC Berkeley. After losing her young dog, Gust, to auto-immune disease, it became clear to her that our pets need to be treated with as much care as our children and ourselves. Her love of animals and passion for environmentally friendly design found a happy marriage in the invention of the Greenroof Animal Home. She continues to practice landscape design in Oakland, CA, using native plants, nature-based systems, and chemical-free maintenance. Her dedication to environmental responsibility is evident in her day-to-day life as she drives her pre-owned vehicle, fueled by recycled vegetable oil, to hand-pick materials for her projects

sebastian

Sebastian von Nagel is partner and master craftsman at SPD.Currently a woodworker, Sebastian is an interior designer by training and a kayak builder by love. He has shared his home with dogs and cats as well as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, lizards, iguanas, ducks, chickens, pheasants, geese and a multitude of exotic birds (!), with the philosophy of being caregiver, not "owner" to these animals. With his commitment towards a healthier society, strong consideration for animal well-being, appreciation for aesthetics and pleasure in creating unique works of art, it was only natural that he come on board at SPD. This photograph of Sebastian with his friend Éntree is evocative of his ideal life as a gentleman farmer.

Gretyl Rubin is the soul of SPD and serves as its model and inspiration. She was rescued from the jaws of death at an animal shelter and has grown from a scared, anxious young pup into a bold, beautiful, confident and ridiculous creature. She is a persistent reminder to step away from tools and machines and enjoy life by howling, tearing around in mad circles, jumping in puddles, and rolling in stinky things. She and the bunny are regular fixtures at SPD's headquarters.
